Every state runs its own free search, and each one only knows about its own records. That is why searching one state and stopping is the most common mistake there is.

Unclaimed money is reported to the state where the company or bank is based, not where you live now. So search every state where you have lived, worked, rented or banked, plus the state where a relative or a business of yours was based. Try name variations too: a maiden name, a middle initial, an old spelling.
The office that holds it differs. It is usually the State Treasurer or Comptroller, but not everywhere; the office is named under each state below. Searching and claiming are always free.
All fifty official offices are listed at unclaimed.org, the portal of the state treasurers themselves.
